Yet Another Phone Interview

Tēnā koutou. Welcome to the YAPI website.
This site has been created to tell you all about YAPI (pronounced "yappy").

It all started when I moved to Atlanta and was looking for a job. The pace of recruiting in Atlanta is a lot slower and a lot more complicated than what I am used to.
For some of the big companies the process was very complex because you had to talk to the recruiter and then to the HR department and then to the team leader and then to the team and then again with the team leader, and so on. With a particular company I have received around 15 phone calls in one month of which most of the phone calls were to tell me that there will soon be another phone call or to confirm that I did get some other phone call. The process was not completed in that one month and there are more phone calls to come. Of course they do not wish to "waste" their time on "real" interviews so this is all done on the phone.
At some point I decided that in Atlanta I should always be expecting "YAPI" = Yet Another Phone Interview, and the companies who conduct endless phone calls for this process can be defined as a "YAPI company".

Before I moved to Atlanta I lived in another country where things work differently. A company would arrange for an on-site interview with the potential employee with the team manager (usually skipping phone interviews altogether), and if the potential employee was very good, the other managers would meet with him immediately afterwards (if possible) and sometimes by the end of the day a contract would be signed and there would be a new employee in the company.

The YAPI system used in Atlanta may cause some companies to "lose" these good employees because by the time they finish with this drawn-out process, another company will have "grabbed" this employee. Therefore, YAPI companies will probably get the mediocre employees that no one else wants.

If your company is a YAPI company, you should tell them to peek at this site...

Enjoy life!
